You Get What You Pay For!
When it comes to window coverings and blinds, you really do get what you pay for. Recently, I stopped into a local big box store to check out what was available, and saw an aisle filled with blinds from popular brands, and that store’s own knock-off products. It was the same run-of-the-mill blind that we see all over town. But the display model was so shocking that it had to be seen to be believed.

The “plantation blinds” displayed in a local big-box store were so embarrassingly warped that we had to take a photo.
These “plantation blinds” were being sold for a ridiculously low price. It’s a good thing, too. Because the display model was warped and bent to the point that it’s a wonder that they’re still being shown.
This display was a classic example of the great truth that you really do get what you pay for when it comes to blinds. Most of our big box stores offer their own label on cut-down blinds, and maybe one of the big manufacturers. Is it really worth it to spend a few extra dollars on Graber products?
At Made in the Shade, we’re convinced that the answer is a resounding YES. That off-brand knockoff is lucky to have a 1-year warranty (which we had to dig into the box to find). The popular name brand blind has a 10-year warranty. Sure, that sounds impressive, but it really isn’t.
With Graber, every blind they make has a limited lifetime warranty.
Every. Single. Blind.
Even their least-expensive line, Simple Selections, offers this incredible warranty. They stand by their product — which is why we stand by them.
See the Difference!
But what makes our Graber blinds so much better? Is there really that much of a difference? Absolutely. The difference is in the slats.
We decided to pick up one of those cheap “plantation blinds” at that local store and cut out one of the slats (It was surprisingly easy to cut!). Then, we pulled out our Simple Selections sample book and set the “plantation blind” on top of our lowest-priced Graber Faux Wood blind. From the top, there’s not much of a difference. Heck, the store-bought sample even has a nifty texture.
The difference is in the thickness. The Graber sample is almost twice the thickness as the store-bought slat, and what a difference that makes! You really do get what you pay for — and Graber gives real value for every dollar.

- It took a surprisingly little amount of effort to cut off a sample of the store-bought slat!
- We pulled out the Faux Wood page of our Simple Selections sample book to see if there’s a difference.
- When stacked, the Graber slat (bottom) is almost twice the thickness of the store-bought slat! WHAT a huge difference!
